So, should you shelve online dating all together? Definitely not. Online dating can work for you, just make sure you’re smart about it.

Let’s face it, the older you get the harder it is to meet people. As you know by now, you probably aren’t going to meet Mr. Right in a bar anyway. What you want at this stage of your life is a quiet dinner in a restaurant where you can actually hear each other speak. Flashing lights, pulsating bass and overpriced cocktails aren’t really your scene anymore. Online dating is a good resource for finding people with similar interests who are at the same stage in life as you.

In addition to age, religious preferences can also be pinpointed in online dating. Let’s say for example, you’re Jewish and you are only looking for someone who is also Jewish. You could set up a profile on, which was created only for people of Jewish faith. It might be a good idea narrow down your candidate pool in this way if you have certain must-have criteria.

If you feel you’ve absolutely exhausted the dating pool in your area, you might also want to put up a profile on an online dating site. Maybe you live in a small town that’s not really close to anything so there are limited candidates. Give online dating a shot–what do you have to lose?

Just remember to be safe. Whenever setting up a date, make sure you meet in a very public place where there will be a lot of people around. Always meet at the designated date spot– don’t have your date pick you up at your house. When setting up your profile, use your e-mail address as an initial contact. Don’t give out your phone number right away. And never give out your address online.

While bumping into your soul mate at the grocery store while you both reach for the peas in the frozen food section would be nice, it’s just not that likely. Give online dating a try if you’re feeling like you’re in a dating rut. Just remember to be safe and have an open mind.
